Appalachian Vocal Ensembles Win Regional Competitions

BOONE–Two vocal ensembles from Appalachian State University received honors during the Western North Carolina A Cappella Festival held in Winston-Salem.

The male vocal group “What’s Yer Pleasure” was named best performers in the college competition. They received a superior rating and a $200 prize. The male quartet “Low Down Sound” won second place honors. The group also won the college quartet competition during the International Barbershops Society’s southeastern district competition. They will compete at the society’s international competition in Kansas City, Mo., in July.

The a cappella competition was produced with the cooperation of the Piedmont Chamber Singers of Winston-Salem, the Golden Triad Chorus of Sweet Adelines International, the Triad Harmony Express Barbershop Chorus, and with financial support from the Dixie District of the Barbershoppers Society. The International Barbershoppers Society’s Harmony Foundation also helped finance the competition.

A three-person panel judged the competition. Each group performed two songs within an eight-minute time limitation.

Next year’s competition will occur in mid-April. Call (336) 774-4044.
