Business Faculty Honored for Achievements

cob.jpgBOONE–Appalachian State University’s Walker College of Business has honored three faculty members for excellence in teaching, research and service for the 1999-2000 academic year.

Dr. Don Cox, associate professor of finance, received the Outstanding Teaching Award; assistant professor of accounting Dr. Ron Marden received the Outstanding Research Award; and management professor Dr. Bob Goddard was presented the Outstanding Service Award.

Each received a $1,000 cash award, a bronze sculpture, and a medallion to be worn with academic regalia.

Cox consistently has been recognized for his teaching by students in the college and

Appalachian’s Student Government Association. Students describe him as a popular teacher who is approachable and willing to help. His activities include honors thesis advisor, advisor to the Finance Club for several years, co-founder of the Mountaineer Investment Club, and leader of student trips to New York City.

Cox received a bachelor’s degree at Georgia Southern College, an MBA in finance from Georgia State University and, after nine years of corporate business experience, earned a Ph.D. in finance from Florida State University. He joined the Walker College faculty in 1990.

Marden received a bachelor’s degree and a master of accountancy degree from Florida Atlantic University and a Ph.D. from the School of Accountancy at University of South Florida.

He came to Appalachian in 1995.

A certified public accountant and a certified internal auditor, Marden holds membership in numerous professional organizations. His research proposals have resulted in several grants. His research is regularly accepted for publication by a variety of accounting-related journals and he frequently presents his research at professional conferences.

Goddard came to Appalachian as an assistant professor. He received a bachelor’s degree from Florida Atlantic University with a major in international business, an MBA from the University of North Florida and a Ph.D. in business administration from the University of South Carolina with emphases on organizational behavior, international business and organizational psychology.

Goddard’s management consulting with businesses and governmental agencies is extensive, and he is involved with professional activities on the national and international levels. At the university, he has been an academic and student organization advisor, participated in or led four summer study abroad programs, and served as head coach of the women’s soccer program for eight years. Additionally, Goddard is involved in the community through government, school and service activities.

The business school’s Day of Excellence faculty awards are made possible by a contribution from G.A. Sywassink, CEO of Standard Holding Company of Charlotte. Sywassink is a member and former chair of the college’s Business Advisory Council and serves on the Appalachian State University Foundation Board. He is an honorary Appalachian alumnus and has been honored by the Foundation for his long-standing support of the university and its programs.
