Katsarelis Conducts Appalachian Symphony Orchestra Sept. 29

BOONE – Cynthia Katsarelis will conduct the Appalachian Symphony Orchestra Sept. 29 at 8 p.m. in Rosen Concert Hall, Broyhill Music Center at Appalachian State University.

The public is welcome to attend and there is no admission charge.

Katsarelis will conduct the orchestra in “Abduction from the Seraglio Overture” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, featuring “Presto-Andante-Presto.”

The orchestra also will perform “Petrouchka” by Igor Stravinsky.

The piece consists of four tableaus: “The Shrove-Tide Fair,” “Petrouchka’s Room,” “The Moor’s Room” and “The Shrove-Tide Fair.”

Katsarelis is associate conductor of the Greensboro Symphony Orchestra, music director of the Greensboro Symphony Youth Orchestra and conducted the Chamber and String Orchestras at Appalachian’s Cannon Music Camp last summer.

She is a former conducting assistant with the Cincinnati Symphony and “Pops” Orchestra and has conducted the Buffalo Philharmonic. Katsarelis earned her bachelor of music and master of music degrees in violin performance and conducting at the Peabody Conservatory of Music of the Johns Hopkins University and is completing the doctoral degree from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.
