Summer Performing Arts Series Presents World-Renowned Guitarist

doug.jpgBOONE — Classical guitarist Douglas James will be in concert Sunday, Aug. 5, at 8 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Recital Hall on the Appalachian State University campus. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students. Children accompanied by parents are free. Tickets will be available at the door.

The program will feature a wide variety of works by Italian, Spanish and South American composers from the 16th to the 20th centuries played on modern and a rare French 19th century guitar from the artist’s collection.

James, a native of Charlotte, has been a member of the music faculty at Appalachian since 1995.

His performing career regularly takes him across the United States and Europe.

James twice has received the prestigious Solo Recitalist Fellowship from the

National Endowment for the Arts, and has been featured on NPR’s Performance Today.

His solo CD of 19th century Italian music played on instruments of the period has received international acclaim. He recently released a new recording in collaboration with Italian guitarist Pasquale Rucco featuring duets of the early Romantic period.

Sunday’s concert is the fourth of a series sponsored jointly by Appalachian’s Office of Summer Sessions and the Watauga County Arts Council.
