Lineback Receives Geography Educator of the Year Honors

lineback.jpgBOONE — Neal Lineback, professor of geography at Appalachian State University, has received the Geography Educator of the Year Award from the North Carolina Geographical Society.

This is the first year the award has been presented. The award recognizes outstanding service to geography.

“Neal Lineback is the ideal person to receive the very first Geography Educator of the Year Award,” said outgoing NCGS president Doug Carroll. “His work with the Geography in the News newspaper column has helped spread the news about geography.”

Lineback was nominated for the award by NCGS members from across the state.

“Neal is one of the most dedicated geographers I have had the privilege of knowing,” said geography professor Tom Ross of UNC Pembroke, following the award presentation. “His work at the local, state and national levels with the World Geography Bowl has helped foster an increased interest in the study of geography among college students throughout the United States and abroad. In addition to the Geography Bowl, Neal’s geography column is used nationwide by teachers in middle and high schools. It is indeed most fitting that this award is presented to Neal Lineback.”

Lineback chaired Appalachian’s Department of Geography and Planning from 1987 to 1998. Prior to that he was chairman of geography at the University of Alabama.

He is active in professional geography organizations, having served in many capacities with the Association of American Geographers, National Council of Geographic Education, Southeast Division of American Geographers, and the North Carolina Geographic Society.
