Faculty Recital Series: “An Evening with the Piano Trio”

BOONE–Appalachian State University and the Hayes School of Music will host a faculty recital Oct. 1 at 8 p.m. in the Broyhill Music Center Concert Hall.

The recital, titled “An Evening with the Piano Trio,” will feature Nancy Bargerstock on violin, Kenneth Lurie on cello and Bair Shagdaron on piano.

The planned feature pieces include “Trio No. 43 in C Major” by Joseph Haydn, “Three Nocturnes” by Ernest Bloch and “Piano Trio No. 1 in D minor” by Anton Arensky.

Admission for the concert is free.

Bargerstock is an instructor of music at Appalachian. She received a bachelor of music and a master of music degree from the Julliard School of Music in New York City.

She has performed extensively throughout the United States and Europe, playing in the world’s most prestigious auditoriums, including Carnegie Hall, Boston Symphony Hall and the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.

Bargerstock joined the faculty at Appalachian in 1999. Lurie, an associate professor of music, is a graduate of the Eastman School of Music. A native of New Jersey, Lurie held academic appointments at Shenandoah Conservatory and Roanoke College prior to joining the Appalachian music faculty in 1987.

An accomplished soloist, Shagdaron won fourth prize at the 1980 International J.S. Bach Competition in Leipzig, Germany and third prize at the 1992 International Competition for Piano and Orchestra in Mazara del Vallo, Italy. Also in 1992 he was awarded the honorary title of “The People’s Artist of Buryat Republic” (Russia).
