“Catfish Moon” by Laddy Sartin is a down-home comedy with a particular North Carolina flair. The old fishing pier at the end of Cypress Lake was the favorite hangout for three best friends when they were kids for skipped school. This is where they skinny-dipped, and even experienced the mysteries of kissing girls.

Now Curley, Gordon and Frog are older and have tasted the bitterness of life as well as its sweetness. In an attempt to recapture their friendship and settle old disputes, all three go on an overnight fishing trip. Lifted by laughter and their love of fishing, the three men discover that their friendship was never really lost.

The Charlotte Observer says “Catfish Moon” is “…full of the most bodacious joviality…the ending is pure delight, comic writing as sweet as it comes.”

Highland Repertory Theatre Artistic Director Andrew Gall describes “Catfish Moon” as “a delightful cross between the films ‘Grumpy Old Men’ and ‘Steel Magnolias’.”

The cast members are Leon Contravesprie, Jason Johnson and Jason Kennah. Rae Geoffrey plays Curly’s little sister, Frog’s ex wife and Gordon’s new sweetheart. David Matthews is the director.

Matthews is a graduate of Appalachian and holds an MFA from the University of Southern Mississippi. His directing credits include productions for The N.C. Arts Council, Asheville Community Theatre and Flat Rock Playhouse.

The technical and design staff are R.B. Hill, scenic design, Todd Wren, lighting design, Sonya Poole, costume design, and Dave Eshan, sound design. Carla Pridgen is the production stage manager.

Highland Repertory Theatre is Asheville’s premier professional theatre company. Its mission is to produce compelling and accessible theatre reflecting a commitment to excellence. The Department of Theatre and Dance will lend technical support to the play’s production in Valborg Theatre.
