Appalachian Symphony Performance Features Brahms and Tchaikovsky

BOONE–The Mariam Cannon Hayes School of Music at Appalachian State University presents the Appalachian Symphony Orchestra in concert Sunday, Dec. 7, at 2 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall.

James Allen Anderson is the director. The concert is free and the public is invited.

The program opens with “Academic Festival Overture” by Johannes Brahms. Brahms composed the overture in appreciation of an honorary doctorate presented by the University of Breslau in 1879. The composition was quite popular with the university students, as it was based on popular drinking songs.

The next piece on the program is an oboe concerto by Bohuslva Martinu, which features Hayes School of Music faculty member Alicia Chapman.

The program will conclude with “Symphony No. 2 in C minor” by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.
