TV Program Spotlights Chancellor-elect Kenneth E. Peacock

BOONE–The family atmosphere at Appalachian State University gets Chancellor-elect Kenneth E. Peacock excited about coming to work each day.

” It’s that family feeling,” Peacock says on “Appalachian Perspective” cable television program. “You realize the people you work with are so good and caring and you think, Why go anywhere else? It couldn’t be better anywhere than it is here.”

Peacock, former dean of Appalachian’s Walker College of Business, begins his duties as chancellor July 1. Since his election by the UNC Board of Governors in February, Peacock has been preparing for his new role by listening to the needs of faculty, staff and students.

” I want to know what their needs are. It’s a great institution I’m inheriting, and I want to make sure I continue that quality,” Peacock says on the 30-minute program.

” I don’t want to be just the sixth chancellor of Appalachian State,” he continues. “I want to be the chancellor for the faculty, the staff, the students, the alumni and the people of this community. I work for them. I want to follow along the tradition set for me by my predecessors in terms of doing my job with the same integrity, openness and willingness to listen.”

In the interview hosted by Interim Chancellor Harvey Durham, Peacock also discusses what he sees as his initial challenges: balancing increased enrollment with limited state appropriations, and encouraging more opportunities for off-campus growth.

A former auditor and tax accountant with Price Waterhouse, Peacock began his academic career in 1980 as an assistant professor of accounting at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. He joined Appalachian’s Walker College of Business in 1982 as an assistant professor and rose through the faculty ranks before becoming assistant dean in 1987. He was promoted to associate dean in 1989 and named dean of the college in 1992. He held that post until being appointed interim provost and vice chancellor in July 2003. After a national search of candidates, Peacock was elected to be Appalachian’s next chancellor.

” Appalachian Perspective” is a production of Appalachian State University. The episode “Introducing Chancellor-elect Kenneth E. Peacock” will air throughout May on the following local channels: Charter Communications’ Channel 21 each weekday at 10 a.m., 2 p.m. and 6 p.m., and Channel 2 at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday; and on MTN’s Channel 18 at 9:30 a.m. Sunday and 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
