Campus Street Named for Wilkes County Resident

050604branch_dl.jpgBOONE–There’s a new street on the Appalachian State University campus. Jack Branch Drive intersects with Stadium Drive and fronts Owens Field House near Kidd Brewer Stadium.

Branch is a longtime supporter of the athletic programs at Appalachian and a permanent fixture at most athletic events. “Most people are recognized because they give a lot of money. Jack gives a lot of love,” said men’s basketball coach Houston Fancher.

Branch often supplies traveling teams with juice, pastries and other items, and on Valentine’s Day, he distributes a yellow rose to each of the women athletes. He often drives great distances to support the women’s basketball, field hockey, soccer, softball and other teams at away games and championship competitions.

Branch is known as the “apple man” by most student athletes for his practice of leaving boxes of apples from Wilkes County in the athletic offices for everyone to enjoy.

He is a former member of the Alumni Council and Yosef Club Advisory Board. Branch earned his undergraduate degree from Davidson College and a master’s degree from Appalachian. He is a retired driver’s education teacher and coach from Wilkes County.
