051004lineback_dl.jpgBOONE–Dr. Neal Lineback has been named interim dean of Appalachian State University’s College of Arts and Science for the 2004-05 academic year.

Lineback came to Appalachian in 1986 as a professor of geography. He chaired the Department of Geography and Planning from 1986-98.

” As a longtime member of our faculty and an experienced administrator, Dr.

Lineback is aware of the challenges and opportunities facing the College of Arts and Sciences and our university. I look forward to working with him during this period of transition,” said Chancellor-elect Kenneth E. Peacock.

Neal Lineback was one of the principal investigators and grant manager on a NASA and National Science Foundation funded project to analyze the state’s greenhouse gas emissions and prepare a state action plan that might be used to reduce the emissions.

He was elected to Appalachian’s College of Arts and Sciences Academy of Outstanding Teachers in 1998.

Lineback received Travelocity’s Excellence in Geography Education Award in February for his newspaper column “Geography in the News.” He created the column more than 17 years ago to help public school students and others better understand the relationship between geography and economics, politics, agriculture and other topics.

He helped develop the World Geography Bowl into a popular regional and national competition. The Association of American Geographers presented Lineback its Distinguished Service Award in 1999 for his work with the competition.
