Waters Named Geology Department Chairman at Appalachian

BOONE—Johnny A. Waters has been named chairman of the Department of Geology at Appalachian State University. He will begin his duties Aug. 1.

Waters comes to Appalachian from the State University of West Georgia where he chaired the Department of Geosciences from 1999-2002. He also directed West Georgia’s Center for Water Resources from 1999-2004, and has been a member of the university’s faculty since 1985. He has taught courses in paleontology and evolution and honors courses on dinosaur biology.

Waters earned a Ph.D. in geology from Indiana University in 1978.

He has received research grants and contracts to conduct long-term monitoring of water quality, assess biotic integrity of surface waters and watersheds in various locations in Georgia.

He has presented his research at various academic conferences and symposiums, including the Geological Society of America, the Palaentological Association and the International Geological Congress.

His articles have been published in the “Journal of Paleontology,” “Journal of Paleontology,” “Geology” and the “Bulletin” of the Geological Society of America.

Articles about his collaborative research have appeared in Science, Science News and National Geographic.
