Guitar Concert Features Douglas James

BOONE—The Appalachian State University’s Hayes School of Music invites music lovers to a special guitar concert with Douglas James Monday, Sept 27, at 8 p.m., in Broyhill Music Center’s Recital Hall. Admission is free.

The program features works by 19th-century composers and begins with “Variazione sulla teme de Handel, op. 107″ by Mauro Giuliani. James also will perform “Variations on ‘God Save the King,’ op. 24″ by George Henry Derwort, “Variations on a Theme of Mozart, op. 9″ by Fernando Sor, and works by Manuel de Falla, Agustin Barrios Mangore and 20th=century composer Jorge Morel.

James is an assistant professor of music at Appalachian. He has appeared as a classical guitarist throughout the United States as well as in Europe and Mexico. He has been a featured recitalist at such notable venues as Italy’s L’Estate Chitarristica sul Lago Maggiore, the Great Lakes Classical Guitar Festival at Oberlin Conservatory, Charleston’s Piccolo Spoleto festival, and New York’s Carnegie and Merkin halls.

In 1992 he was the top prizewinner in the Arturo Toscanini Solo Guitar Competition (Italy), and twice has been awarded a National Endowment for the Arts Solo Recitalist Fellowship.
