Jazz Ensemble to Perform Concert featuring Chuck Owen

BOONE – The Hayes School of Music presents the Jazz Ensemble I in concert, conducted by Todd Wright and special guest conductor Chuck Owen, on Wednesday, Nov. 3.

The concert, featuring guest artist Jack Wilkins and other soloists, will start at 8 p.m. in Appalachian State University’s Farthing Auditorium. Admission is free. For more information, call the Hayes School of Music at (828) 262-3020.

Wright, director of jazz studies for the Hayes School of Music, will conduct the first three selections on the program: “Carmelo’s by the Freeway,” “South 21st Shuffle” and “Hazyness.”

Owen will conduct his own compositions, including “Madcap,” “Glib,” “My Foolish Heart,” “Along Came Benny” and “E-ticket.”

Owen is director of jazz studies at the University of South Florida. He is known for incorporating musical elements such as hip-hop, country, zydeco, folk, salsa and funk into his works.

He was recently chosen as president-elect of the International Association for Jazz Educators.

The Jazz Ensemble I has performed with international artists such as Clark Terry, Jon Faddis, Michael Brecker, Benny Golson, Eddie Daniel, Wycliffe Gordon, Ed Shaunghnessy and others. The ensemble’s performances include regional music conferences and jazz festivals.
