Public Invited to Tour New Belk Library and Information Commons

BOONE – Area residents are invited to tour the new Carol Grotnes Belk Library and Information Commons at Appalachian State University.

The library will hold community day tours on July 14 at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., and July 21 and 26 at 2 and 5:30 p.m. Tours will last about an hour. Refreshments will be served.

Participants are asked to meet in the atrium in the building’s entrance. Parking is available on campus for a fee in the Rivers Street parking deck, and in the large lot near Raley and Edwin Duncan halls after 5 p.m. at no charge.

The new 210,000-square-foot, $40 million building opened June 20. It was funded by proceeds from the University of North Carolina bond referendum that passed in 2000. A parking deck that is part of the project will be built adjacent to the library following the demolition of Whitener Hall.

The five-floor structure houses the library’s 850,000 volumes and accommodates growth for the next 10 to 15 years. The new library has 29 group-study rooms and 250 computer workstations, a 125-seat lecture hall and a cybercafe.
