Wind Ensemble Concert Held Dec. 1

BOONE—The Mariam Cannon Hayes School of Music’s Wind Ensemble at Appalachian State University will perform Dec. 1 at 8 p.m. The free concert will be held in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall.

The wind ensemble is conducted by Dr. William A. Gora.

William Harbinson’s “The Maestro’s Flourish” opens the program. Harbinson is dean of the music school. The piece, which won the 2005 Dallas Wind Symphony composition contest, is dedicated to Gora, who has served as director of bands at Appalachian since 1976.

The composition’s active, rhythmic structure portrays the excitement and anticipation of an audience and performers before a concert.

The ensemble also will perform “Variations on the Porazzi Theme of Wagner” from Alfred Reed’s “Symphony No. 3.”

The selection is a variation on what is probably the last piece of music Richard Wagner composed. Intended as a tribute to his Wagner’s wife, it is known as the “Porazzi” theme, after the villa in Italy where the Wagner family stayed while the piece was being composed.

William Walton’s and Edith Sitwell’s “Facade, An Entertainment” blends music and poetry. Music faculty member Joby Bell will recite.

Also on the program are William Schuman’s “When Jesus Wept” and Gustav Holst’s “Hammersmith.”
