Appalachian offers weeklong day camps for area children

BOONE—Appalachian State University’s Camp UREC will offer a variety of activities for area children this summer. A total of nine weeklong camps will be offered beginning June 8.

Parents can register their children for one or all weeks. Prices range from $175 to $225 a week per child.

Camp UREC is a recreational day camp based in Appalachian’s University Recreation department.  University students serve as camp counselors. Campers range from rising 1st graders to rising 8th graders.

Camp UREC works with many aspects of University Recreation, including Outdoor Programs, fitness and aquatics to provide activities that range from scaling the 50- foot indoor climbing wall to splashing in the university’s Olympic-size swimming pool.  Lunch will be in the university Central Dining Facility.

This summer, Camp UREC will offer two new programs:  Counselor-in-Training  and Adventure Camp.  Counselor-in-Training provides an opportunity for rising 7th through rising 9th graders to shadow counselors, lead activities and learn about being a Camp UREC counselor.

Adventure Camp participants will explore the High Country through activities such as hiking, outdoor swimming, canoeing and rock climbing.

To sign up for any of the nine weeks of camp, visit the Student Recreation Center on campus or Information is also available from Camp UREC director Erin Carpenter at or 828-262-2100.
