Highway travel advisory for Dec. 13

A section of U.S. Hwy. 321 between Lenoir and Blowing Rock has been closed because of a threat of rockslides. The portion of the road that is closed is north of Lenoir, between Kirby Mountain Road and Waterfalls Road.

Appalachian freshman wins second place in ski design competition

josephtoney_t.jpgBOONE – Appalachian State University freshman Joseph Toney has combined his love of art, design and skiing to win second place in a ski design competition. Toney of Boone created a contemporary design featuring a woman’s profile for the competition sponsored by T. J. Schiller, one of the world’s top professional freestyle skiers. The contest received more than 200 entries.

Journalism student at Appalachian receives internship with Scripps Howard News Service

BOONE—Nicole Roberti, a junior journalism major and media studies minor at Appalachian State University, has received the Scripps Howard Foundation Semester in Washington internship for spring semester.

Szulik to deliver commencement address Dec. 13 at Appalachian

Matthew J. Szulik_t.jpgBOONE—Matthew J. Szulik will be the commencement speaker for ceremonies Dec. 13 at Appalachian State University.

Szulik is chairman of the board of Red Hat, the world’s leading open source and Linux provider headquartered in Raleigh. He also is a member of Appalachian’s Board of Trustees.

Appalachian receives $300,000 grant to assist Mexican university with renewable energy and energy efficiency educational programs

Appalachian to expand partnership with National Park Service

BPC_t.jpgBOONE—Appalachian State University is one of 18 nonprofit organizations from across the United States to receive cooperative agreement status with the National Park Service’s Service and Conservation Corps Program. The five-year agreement will enable the university to contract with any of the National Park Service sites to provide rehabilitation, restoration and enhancement work.

Annual New Play Festival presented Dec. 2-5

BOONE – Appalachian State University’s Department of Theatre and Dance presents the  annual Playcrafters New Play Festival Dec. 2-5 in I.G. Greer Studio Theatre. All performances begin at 7 p.m.  The festival highlights new plays written, directed and performed by students.
