Annual Juried Student Exhibition on display at Appalachian

BOONE – Art Expo 2010, an annual juried student exhibition, is on display through April 14 at Catherine J. Smith Gallery at Appalachian State University. The gallery is open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

A reception will be held on Friday, April 9, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., with an award ceremony to follow at 5 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Musicians from the Hayes School of Music will perform throughout the afternoon.

The 71 works included in Art Expo 2010 were selected from more than 700 entries of artwork that were on display during an open house in Wey Hall.  Guest jurors Banister Pope, Bill Brown and David Tisdale selected the artworks from the categories of  clay, digital imaging, drawing, fibers, graphic design, interactive design, metalsmithing, motion graphics, painting, photography, printmaking and sculpture.

Faculty and students voted for their favorite work in each category to determine the winners of merchant prizes. John Stephenson, an assistant professor in the Department of Art, chaired this year’s event.  “The creativity in student works in all media reflects the energy witnessed in our studios and classrooms this year,” he said.
