Researchers study plants’ natural sunscreen

howieneufeld_t.jpgBOONE—The next time you walk in the woods or around the neighborhood, look for plants with red stems. If you see them, you are witnessing a phenomenon in which the stem of certain plants changes color to protect the plant from too much solar radiation.

Appalachian to test its siren warning system July 7

BOONE—Appalachian State University will test its campus-wide siren warning system Wednesday, July 7, at 11:55 a.m. Tests are normally conducted on the first Wednesday of the month.

Blue Ridge Parkway author Anne Mitchell Whisnant speaks July 8 at Appalachian

The site has images and full-text searching available for many North Carolina college and university yearbooks.

Drawing Readers In: A Glimpse into the Beulah C. Campbell Collection of Original Illustrations for Children’s Books

Smith Gallery located in Farthing Auditorium on the Appalachian State University campus. The collection is housed in Appalachian’s Belk Library and Information Commons.

Baumhover named interim provost at Appalachian

Dr. Lorin Baumhover.jpgBOONE – Dr. Lorin Baumhover has been named interim provost at Appalachian State University effective July 1. He will replace Dr. Stan Aeschleman who announced last August his plans to step down from the administrative position he has held since 2004 and return to the classroom.

Hayes completes N.C. Justice Academy course

BOONE—Brian R. Hayes, an officer with Appalachian State University Police, has completed the N.C. Justice Academy’s traffic enforcement and investigation certificate program.

Gardening in the Shade workshop added July 17

shadegardening_t.jpgBOONE—The 10 a.m. and noon “Gardening in the Shade” workshops July 17 have filled. An early-bird workshop from 8-9:45 a.m. has been added to accommodate individuals interested in learning how to create beautiful gardens on property with shade.

The class is led by Jerry Meyer, Appalachian State University’s Department of Biology greenhouse manager. He will define shade at its various levels and explore a gallery of 30 or more trees, shrubs, perennials and native wildflowers that prefer less sunlight. Attention also will be given to plant care, maintenance and selection. The workshop provides a great opportunity for individuals to ask questions about their property’s shady environments.

The greenhouse is located at 333 Dale St., directly across from the State Farm parking lot.

There is no fee for the class, but donations are accepted. Register for either workshop by emailing or calling 262-4025.  Note that this class is slightly longer than normal.

The biology department conservatory now boasts nearly 600 species of tropical, subtropical and temperate plants.  The conservatory is open to visitors weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Group tours are available upon prearrangement.

Hoffman honored by International City/County Management Association

hoffman_t.jpgBOONE—Dr. Marvin Hoffman has been awarded the 2010 ICMA Academic Award in Memory of Stephen B. Sweeney. The International City/County Management Association (ICMA) award will be presented at the association’s fall conference to be held in San Jose, Calif., in October.
