Appalachian’s Enology and Viticulture Program hosts viticulture workshop Nov. 1

grapes_t.jpgBOONE—Growers of wine grapes throughout Western North Carolina are invited to a viticulture discussion Nov. 1 at Appalachian State University’s Broyhill Inn and Conference Center in Boone.

Experts in grape growing, soil pathology, plant pathology and grape analysis from across the state will present on region-specific viticulture issues. Established winegrowers are invited to bring their vineyard questions and take advantage of this rare opportunity to interact with a combination of viticulture extension, research, and analytical support specialists.

The registration deadline is Friday, Oct. 22. To register, visit or call Franya Hutchins in the Enology and Viticulture office at 828-262-8158. The workshop will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. A $20 fee includes lunch.

Presenters are Gil Giese, viticulture instructor for Surry Community College, Dr. Turner Sutton, N.C. State University plant pathologist, Dr. Sara Spayd, N.C. State University viticulture extension agent, Hollis Price, wine analysis coordinator at Appalachian, Dr. John Havlin, N.C. State University soil scientist, and Richard Boylan, Watauga County Agriculture Extension Agent.

This workshop is part of a series being launched by Appalachian’s Enology and Viticulture and funded by the North Carolina Rural Economic Development Center. Future topics will cover quality issues in the winemaking process, sustainable winegrowing, making sparkling wines, marketing for winemakers, and lab analysis for grapes and wine.
