Appalachian Symphony Orchestra performs Dec. 2

BOONE—The works of John Harbinson, Aaron Copland and Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky will be performed by the Appalachian Symphony Orchestra Dec. 2.

The performance begins at 8 p.m. in Farthing Auditorium at Appalachian State University. Admission is free.

The orchestra is conducted by James Allen Anderson. Clarinetist Andrea Cheeseman will be the guest soloist.

The program opens with Harbinson’s “Remembering Gatsby (Foxtrot for Orchestra).” A native of New Jersey, Harbinson, has composed more than 70 works, including those for orchestra, chamber groups and soloists.  “Remembering Gatsby” was written in 1985 for the Atlanta Symphony.

Cheeseman is featured in Copland’s “Clarinet Concerto,” which was commissioned in the late 1940s for Swing Era musician and band leader Benny Goodman. It is arranged in two movements – the first slow and expressive and the second characterized by Latin rhythms inspired by Copland’s travels to Rio de Janeiro.  Goodman gave the first public performance of the piece in 1950.

The program concludes with a holiday season favorite – selections from “The Nutcracker” by Tchaikovsky.
