Appalachian Wind Ensemble featured in Dec. 5 performance

BOONE—Four major works for wind ensemble will be performed Dec. 5 at 2 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall on the Appalachian State University campus. Admission is free.

The concert features the Appalachian Wind Ensemble directed by Dr. John Stanley Ross and graduate student conductor Les Turner.

Norman Dello Joio’s “Variants on a Mediaeval Tune” opens the performance. The work was commissioned for the Duke University Band and first performed in 1963. The composition’s theme is based on variations of the Christmas carol “Good Christian Men, Rejoice.”

Turner conducts Frank Ticheli’s “Shenandoah,” based on the popular folksong. Fisher Tull’s “Sketches on a Tudor Psalm” also will be featured during the ensemble’s performance. The work is based on a setting of the “Second Psalm” by 16th-century composer Thomas Tallis.
