Department of Technology now Department of Technology and Environmental Design

Appalachian State University’s Department of Technology has been renamed the Department of Technology and Environmental Design to better reflect the degree programs and mission of the department.

“This is an example of the manner in which the applied arts continually grow and develop as new concepts and ideas are translated into avenues for academic study,” said Dr. Glenda Treadaway, dean of the College of Fine and Applied Arts, which houses the department. “The technology and design programs that make up this department have grown and adapted to current needs and trends, and changing the name will help solidify the department’s identity.”

The Department of Technology and Environmental Design offers degree programs in appropriate technology, technology education, building science, graphic arts and imaging technology, technical photography, industrial design and interior design. Over time, the department has established itself as a leader in innovative research in sustainable building practices, renewable energy, design and applied technology.

In addition to the educational component, the department also encourages research and hands-on experiences to help students apply the academic concepts they learn in the classroom to real-world scenarios and problems. Faculty and students also serve the local community and beyond with service-learning opportunities and community outreach.

The Department of Technology and Environmental Design enrolls more than 800 majors.
