The exhibit is running concurrently with the BFA Senior Studio Exhibition: Fall 2011 at the Catherine Smith Gallery in Farthing Auditorium on campus. A closing reception for Crowning Glory will be held on Friday, Dec.16, from 4:30 – 5:30 p.m. in Looking Glass Gallery, followed by a reception from 5:30 – 7 p.m. for the BFA exhibition at Catherine Smith Gallery.

Both events are free and open to the public.

Flamboyantly whimsical and exaggeratingly campy, still in stature and alive with theatrical play: these are the works of Ford’s “Crowning Glory.” Ford draws artistic inspiration from classical marble sculpture, ornate decorative arts and fashion styles of the Baroque Era, as well as advertisements, illustration and kitsch from vintage America. This body of work combines the visuals of his inspirations with a playful placement of the figures he has created to evoke the effects of interpersonal relationships and self-perspective between artwork and viewer.

While these figures are visually understood as ceramic mannequins, their floral adornments and almost gaudy color schemes flirt with that of contemporary haut couture and liven the pieces to a point of hyperrealism that is uncannily human. As a result, these figures stand as individuals in their own right, communicating a new and unique social construct with the roles they play as people and the space they occupy as objects.

A native of Charlotte, Ford is working towards a B.F.A. in studio art, as well as a B.S. in art education.
