Jowers presents organ recital Sept. 9

BOONE—Organist Florence Jowers will present a guest recital Sunday, Sept. 9, at 6 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall at Appalachian State University. Admission is free and the public is invited.

Jowers is associate professor of music and University Organist at Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory where she teaches in the sacred music program. She also is the organist at First Baptist Church in Hickory.

Her recital opens with “Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, BWV 538” by Johann Sebastian Bach. Jowers also will perform “Variations and Fugue on the English National Anthem” by Max Reger, “Organ Sonata No. 1 in C Minor, Op. 27” by Josef Rheinberger and works by Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck and Lionel Rogg.

Jowers has served as president of Region 2 of the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians, dean of the Hickory Chapter of the American Guild of Organists and has served on the executive board. She is currently secretary of the Charlotte Chapter of the American Guild of Organists.

She has served as a clinician for many professional conferences, and has performed extensively in the United States, Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic, including two performances at the Piccolo Spoleto Festival in Charleston, S.C., and has had performances aired on National Public Radio’s “Pipedreams.”

Jowers received music degrees in organ performance and church music from the Yale University School of Music and Stetson University.
