Professor named associate editor for online research center

BOONE—Dr. Tina McCorkindale, an assistant professor in the Department of Communication at Appalachian State University, will serve as an editor for an innovative online research center focusing on the science of social media.

Entrepreneur Summit held Nov. 9 at Appalachian

BOONE—The Transportation Insight Center for Entrepreneurship’s 10th Annual Carole Moore McLeod Entrepreneur Summit will be held Nov. 9 in the Walker College of Business at Appalachian State University.

Faculty recital series Nov. 6 features Priscilla Porterfield

BOONE—Mezzo-soprano Priscilla Porterfield is the featured performer in the Hayes School of Music’s Faculty Recital Series Nov. 6.

The program, titled “Of Gardens and Stars,” begins at 8 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall at Appalachian State University. Admission is free and the public is invited.

Guitar and cello duo to perform Nov. 9

BOONE—The Richter Uzur Duo will perform during a guest recital Nov. 9 at Appalachian State University. The performance begins at 6 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Recital Hall. Admission is free.

Clark honored by N.C. travel industry

BOONE—Dr. J. Dana Clark of Lenoir was awarded the Charles Parker Award for Tourism Excellence at the fall 2012 meeting of the North Carolina Tourism Leadership Conference in Raleigh.

Hayes School of Music welcomes new conductor

BOONE—Inspired by his high school orchestra teacher, Dr. Chung Park challenges his students to become “irreplaceable.”

Park is the new director of orchestral activities in Appalachian State University’s Hayes School of Music. Park conducts the Appalachian Symphony Orchestra, Appalachian Philharmonic and Appalachian Opera Theatre. He is an assistant professor of music at Appalachian.

BOONE—“Near and Far,” a lecture by designer Jenn Cash scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 1, at 6:30 p.m. in Belk Library and Information Commons Room 114 at Appalachian State University has been postponed.

Campus emergency siren test conducted Nov. 7

BOONE—Appalachian State University will test its campus-wide siren warning system Wednesday, Nov. 7, at 11:55 a.m. Tests are normally conducted on the first Wednesday of the month. The tone used for the monthly tests is not the same tone used for an actual emergency.

10th Annual Appalachian Mountain Photography Competition accepting submissions

BOONE—The 10th Annual Appalachian Mountain Photography Competition (AMPC) is accepting submissions through 5 p.m. Nov.16. This competition celebrates the unique people, places and pursuits that distinguish the Southern Appalachians and it attracts entries from across the United States. Amateur and professional photographers 13 years of age and older are encouraged to submit entries at
