Award-winning musical “Rent” to be presented Dec. 9 by Appalachian Musical Theatre Ensemble

BOONE—The highly acclaimed musical “Rent” will make its regional premiere at Appalachian State University Dec. 9 with two performances, at 2 and 8 p.m., in Rosen Concert Hall by the newly formed Appalachian Musical Theatre Ensemble.

Reaching 2009 international climate change goals will require aggressive measures

BOONE—Despite an international consensus reached in 2009 to limit climate change by reducing carbon dioxide emissions, scientists say the likelihood of meeting that goal is diminishing.

Siren test scheduled for Dec. 5

BOONE—Appalachian State University will test its campus-wide siren warning system Wednesday, Dec. 5, at 11:55 a.m. Tests are normally conducted on the first Wednesday of the month. The tone used for the monthly tests is not the same tone used for an actual emergency.

Newly acquired art to be displayed at Plemmons Student Union

BOONE—An exhibit of works recently acquired for Plemmons Student Union’s art collections will be featured Dec. 3-14 in Looking Glass Gallery.

Jazz Ensembles perform holiday favorites Dec. 5

BOONE—Holiday favorites will be performed jazz style during a Dec. 5 performance by Jazz Ensembles I and II from Appalachian State University’s Hayes School of Music. The performance, part of the school’s “Tis the Season” holiday concert series, begins at 7:30 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall.

Treble Choir and Men’s Glee Club perform Dec. 4

BOONE—The “Tis the Season” holiday concert series at Appalachian State University highlights vocalists Dec. 4 during a 7:30 p.m. performance by the Treble Choir and Men’s Glee Club. The performance will be in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall in the Hayes School of Music.

Appalachian’s AppKIDS service project benefits 90 area children

BOONE—School supplies, clothing, backpacks and smiles were all part of the annual AppKIDS shopping day sponsored by Appalachian State University’s Staff Senate.

Four new members join Appalachian’s foundation board

BOONE—New members have been elected to four-year terms on the Appalachian State University Foundation Board of Directors. They are Jane M. Edmisten of Washington, D.C., Charlene W. Foley of Durham, J.K. Reaves of Kernersville and C. Hunter Widener of Charlotte.

Mayfield named vice provost for undergraduate education at Appalachian

BOONE—Following a national search, Dr. Mike Mayfield has been named vice provost for undergraduate education at Appalachian State University. Mayfield, a professor of geography, has served in the role of interim vice provost since 2010.
