Visiting Writers Series opens spring semester series March 20

BOONE—Poet Gina Meyers opens the spring semester lineup for the Hughlene Bostian Frank Visiting Writers Series at Appalachian State University.

Meyers will present the craft talk “From Classroom to Community” Thursday, March 20, at 2 p.m. in Plemmons Student Union’s Table Rock Room. Her reading begins at 7:30 pm. in Table Rock Room.

Meyers is the author of two full-length collections of poetry, “Hold It Down” (Coconut Books, 2013) and “A Model Year” (2009), as well as numerous chapbooks. She helps run the What’s New in Poetry series at Emory University.

Other programs are poet and essayist Bruce Weigl, March 27; poet, essayist and novelist Judith Ortiz Cofer, April 10; and poet and essayist Richard Hague, April 17.

All events are free and the public is invited.

The Visiting Writers Series is named in honor of Hughlene Bostian Frank (class of 1968), a past trustee and generous supporter of the university and recipient of the 2013 Appalachian Alumni Association Outstanding Service award.

The Spring 2014 Visiting Writers Series is supported by the Appalachian State University Foundation, Appalachian’s Office of Academic Affairs, the College of Arts and Sciences, the Department of English, the Summer Reading Program, the University Bookstore, Belk Library and Information Commons and the Appalachian Journal. Business sponsors are The Gideon Ridge Inn and The Red Onion Cafe. Community sponsors include John and the late Margie Idol, Paul and Judy Tobin, Alice Naylor, Thomas McLaughlin and The High Country Writers.

Parking is free on campus after 5 p.m. Recommended is the parking deck on College Street, which opens at 5:30 p.m. to the public. From the parking deck follow the walkway between the chiller plant and the University Bookstore, passing the Post Office and to enter the student union on the second floor.
