Big splashes raise cold cash

BOONE—Appalachian State University students and corporate sponsors raised just over $8,000 in less than an hour to benefit Watauga County Special Olympics Feb. 20. The annual Polar Plunge held at the campus duck pond, drew 120 jumpers.

The ROTC program on campus raised $1,520, and a BBQ fundraiser hosted by Roachel Laney from the Department of Health, Leisure and Exercise Science raised $1,381.69. Corporate donations added another $3,660.

The winners of the most extreme costume contest were Mason Morris (Buzz Lightyear), Chadwick Wells (Quail Man) and Blake Wilkinson (elderly woman in bathing suit). The best splash award went to John Shaw.

Corporate sponsors were Smart Products, Boone Optimist Club, Enterline & Russell, Tweetsie Railroad, Hampton’s Body Shop, 3 Rivers Building Supply and Grashal Outdoors.

Gift certificates were donated by Tweetsie Railroad, Outback Steakhouse, Kangaroo Express, Tanger Outlet, Capone’s Pizza, Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches, Pappa John’s Pizza, Anna Banana’s clothing store and Melanie’s Food Fantasy.
