Communication student wins BEA Festival of Media Arts award

BOONE—The creativity of a senior in Appalachian State University’s Department of Communication has garnered honors from the 2014 Broadcast Education Association’s Festival of Media Arts.

Katie Bially, a senior electronic media broadcasting major, won second place in BEA’s commercial category. Her 60-second commercial, “Which Wich Sandwiches,” was one of more than 1,300 entries in this year’s competition. Bially’s winning commercial can be heard at http://mediashowcase.appstate.edu/playlists/audio/126.

Bially’s submission was part of work done in Steve Smith’s Audio Production II class. Since 2007, Smith’s students at Appalachian have won a total of 28 national audio awards from BEA. Smith is a lecturer in the Department of Communication. He is retiring this semester.

The BEA Festival of Media Arts is an international refereed exhibition and a national showcase for student work. Prizes will be awarded during BEA’s annual convention and Festival of Media Arts April 6-9, in Las Vegas.
