Winner of eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, “Spring Awakening” is a rock musical adaptation of Frank Wedekind’s 1891 expressionist play about the trials, tribulations and exhilaration of the teen years.  In addition to capturing the top award in 2007, the show was also honored with Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Book, Best Original Score, Best Direction of a Musical, Best Choreography, and Best Orchestrations in addition to receiving the 2008 Grammy Award Best Musical Show Album.

It’s Germany, 1891. The beautiful young Wendla explores her body and asks her mother where babies come from. Elsewhere, the brilliant and fearless young Melchior defends his buddy Moritz – a boy so traumatized by puberty he can’t concentrate on anything. One afternoon in the woods, Wendla and Melchior discover a desire unlike anything they have ever felt. “Spring Awakening” explores the confusion and desperation that ensue when the onrushing tide of hormones meets the ignorance of children. The show celebrates the unforgettable journey from youth to adulthood with a power, poignancy and passion the audience will never forget.

The all-student production is directed and choreographed by senior theatre major and dance minor Kellie Letner. Music direction is by Dominique Atwater with stage management by Madeline Hintz, both seniors. Freshman Darius Gregory is serving as dance captain and assistant choreographer with seniors Will Allen and Luke Schaffer designing costumes and properties, respectively. Dramaturg for the production is Glenn Driskill.

Letner says of her production that, “Spring Awakening is a coming of age story that pulls at the heartstrings of adolescence and of longing.  It is a story that transcends time to remind us all what it was like to be young.”

The cast features Will Allen and Blair Howerton in the leading roles of Melchior and Wendla, with Jared Coble and Nicole Barone playing the pivotal roles of Moritz and Ilse.  Other cast members include Marc Arrambide, Michelle Buchi, Savannah Core, Angela Gazillo, Darius Gregory, Rachel Leishman, AJ McCurry, Jaraad Samad and Luke Schaffer.

“Spring Awakening” is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI. www.MTIShows.com
