The Brazillian film “Carandriru” will be shown April 10 at 6 Greenbriar Cinema in Plemmons Student Union. Admission is free. A discussion will follow. The film is about Brazil’s largest prison and is based on a book by physician Drauzio Varella who attempted to address the prison’s AIDS crisis and 1992 massacre in which more than 100 prisoners were killed. The prison was demolished in 2002.

Activities April 11 begin at 5 p.m. with an Afro-Brazilian Dance Workshop. A capoeira performance will begin at 6:30 p.m. followed by a free Brazilian dinner at 7:30 p.m. All events will be in Plemmons Student Union’s Grandfather Ballroom.

The celebration is sponsored by the university and the local community.
