Popelars is a 1989 graduate of Appalachian State University. His May 1 presentation begins at 2 p.m. in Plemmons Student Union’s Tater Hill Room at Appalachian.

This professional career talk is offered for students in creative writing, professional writing and marketing fields, but the public also is invited to attend.

A 20-year veteran of book publishing, Popelars has helped launched numerous bestsellers. He will share his insights on marketing campaigns, social media and online strategies, retail positioning, publicity’s role in garnering national media, author tours, and how authors today play a fundamental role in a book’s promotion.

Popelars will also discuss how the complexity of publishing is changing dramatically with the emergence of eBooks and online retailers, and what kind of opportunities are available in marketing and publicity for those who are interested in pursuing a career in publishing.
