A promise to serve

BOONE—Carson D. Rich of Weddington was sworn in Friday as the newest member of Appalachian State University’s Board of Trustees. Rich is president of Appalachian’s Student Government Association and a junior communication/advertising major. Diane C. Deal, Watauga County Clerk of Superior Court and pictured left, administered the oath.

Rich said he ran for SGA president because he loves to give back to organizations. He also was president of his high school student body. “It is a humbling experience to be a part of something so much greater than myself,” he said of his involvement in Appalachian’s SGA and membership on its board of trustees.

Typically, student body presidents serve on the university board of trustees only as ex officio members with non-voting privileges. Appalachian is one of the few institutions that allow the SGA representative voting rights. As the SGA president, Rich is eligible to serve one year on the board.
