Homecoming to be celebrated Oct. 10-11

BOONE—Appalachian State University alumni, students and friends are invited to celebrate “Home Sweet Home Appalachian” Oct. 10-11. The homecoming celebration includes annual traditions such as the Friday night homecoming dance and lip sync competition. The Mountaineers will face off against Liberty University Oct. 11 at Kidd Brewer Stadium at 3:30 p.m.

Multi-award winning musical comedy ‘Urinetown’ to be presented Oct. 11-12

BOONE—On Homecoming weekend, the Appalachian Musical Theatre Ensemble will present the multi-award winning musical comedy “Urinetown” by Greg Kotis and Mark Hollmann. Performances take place at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 11 and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 12, in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall on the Appalachian State University campus.

Women’s Theatre Troupe presents “Decision Height” Oct. 9, 10 and 12

BOONE—Appalachian State University’s Women’s Theatre Troupe presents the new historical drama “Decision Height” by Meredith Dayna Levy in the intimate I.G. Greer Studio Theatre on campus. Feminism’s historical roots are examined in this production about the training of the first female service pilots.

Enrollment breaks the 18,000 mark at Appalachian

BOONE—The numbers won’t be official until late October, but enrollment at Appalachian State University has exceeded 18,000 for the 2014-15 academic year.

Academic building at Appalachian named for the late John A. Garwood

BOONE—The four-story academic building at Appalachian State University formerly known as the CAP building on Rivers Street has been named for the late John A. Garwood of Wilkes County. The building houses the departments of chemistry, computer science and physics and astronomy.

Jazz saxophonist Phil Woods performs Oct. 14 at Appalachian

BOONE—Award-winning jazz saxophonist Phil Woods will perform Tuesday, Oct. 14, at 7 p.m. at the Schaefer Center for the Performing Arts at Appalachian State University.

Annual Black Saturday 5K held Nov. 8

BOONE—The 6th Annual Black Saturday 5K will be held Nov. 8 beginning at 8 a.m. at the Holmes Convocation Center on Rivers Street. The race is a fundraiser for the Recreation Management Association, a student organization, at Appalachian State University. Proceeds will benefit the Dr. Wayne Williams Scholarship Fund.

State Employees’ Credit Union CEO Jim Blaine to speak Oct. 9 at Appalachian

BOONE—Jim Blaine, president and chief executive officer of the State Employees’ Credit Union (SECU), will be the speaker at this year’s fall Harlan E. Boyles Distinguished CEO Lecture at Appalachian State University.
