High school and university student musicians perform Nov. 24

BOONE—The Leesville Road High School Symphonic Band from Raleigh will join the Appalachian Wind Ensemble for a Nov. 24 performance at 8 p.m. in the Schaefer Center for the Performing Arts at Appalachian State University. Admission is free.

Alyssa Montgomery will conduct the high school band. Dr. John Stanley Ross and Dr. Kevin Gray Richardson from the Hayes School of Music will conduct the wind ensemble. Horn player Dr. Karen Robertson, also from the music faculty, will be a guest soloist.

Montgomery is a 2012 Appalachian graduate. While a student in the Hayes School of Music, she performed in the Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, Symphonic Band, Concert Band, the Marching Mountaineers and other chamber ensembles. She was the drum major for the Marching Mountaineers two years. Montgomery joined the Leesville High School band program in 2013.

The high school band will perform “The Star Spangled Banner,” “Ghost Train,” “Ave Maria,” “Minor Alterations: Christmas through the Looking Glass” and “Russian Christmas Music.”

The wind ensemble will perform “Short Ride in a Fast Machine,” “Prelude, Op. 34, No. 14 in E-flat Minor,” “Pelé” featuring soloist Karen Robertson, “Valdres Norwegian March” and “Symphony in B-flat.”

The combined ensembles will perform “The Klaxon” and “Elsa’s Procession to the Cathedral.”
