Gillin named director of athletics at Appalachian

BOONE—Following a national search, Chancellor Sheri N. Everts has named Douglas Gillin director of athletics at Appalachian State University. He will begin his new duties April 6.

BBDO New York CEO to speak April 15 at Appalachian

BOONE—John Osborn, president and chief executive officer of BBDO New York, will be the speaker at this year’s spring Harlan E. Boyles Distinguished CEO Lecture at Appalachian State University.

UNC System avoided $103 million in utility costs in 2013-14

BOONE—The University of North Carolina System avoided $103 million in utility costs in the 2013-14 academic year, according to Len Hoey, energy engineering manager at the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

Smith Gallery presents Art Expo 2015: Annual Juried Student Exhibition

BOONE—The Smith Gallery at Appalachian State University presents Art Expo 2015, an annual juried student exhibition and arts competition for Appalachian students. The exhibition will be on view from Feb. 24 through March 28 at the gallery in the Schaefer Center for the Performing Arts.

Rawls named executive director of educational outreach and summer programs

BOONE—D. Terry Rawls will join Appalachian State University March 2 as executive director of educational outreach and summer programs. Rawls will be replacing Mary Englebert who retired in December 2014.

Appalachian Journal fall/winter issue released

BOONE—Appalachian Journal has released its fall/winter 2015 issue, which features the winning essay of the Appalachian Studies Association’s 2014 Carl Ross Award.

Works by women composers featured March 2

BOONE—Music by women composers will be performed March 2 at Appalachian State University. The annual concert coincides with Women’s History Month. It will begin at 8 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free.

Poetry, mystery and short story writers featured during spring Visiting Writers Series

BOONE—A variety of writing genres will be featured during the spring Hughlene Bostian Frank Visiting Writers Series at Appalachian State University.

2015 rankings of public colleges released by The Business Journals

BOONE—The rankings keep rolling in for Appalachian State University and other N.C. schools. Recently The Business Journals, a division of American City Business Journals, published their top ranking of the nation’s 484 public colleges and universities.
