Poetry sharing circle for transfer and non-traditional student writers held March 31

BOONE—Transfer and non-traditional student creative writers at Appalachian State University are invited to a poetry sharing circle Monday, March 31, from 5-6:30 p.m. in the third floor faculty lounge in Sanford Hall. Refreshments will be provided.

Appalachian to host creative writing workshop for veterans and staged reading of “Deployed”

BOONE—Poet and Vietnam veteran Bruce Weigl will teach a creative writing workshop for veterans March 28 at Appalachian State University. The workshop for students who are veterans, as well for area veterans and their families, will be held from 1-4 p.m. in Plemmons Student Union’s Three Top Mountain Room.

BOONE—Poet and essayist Bruce Weigl will read from his work during a March 27 presentation through the Hughlene Bostian Frank Visiting Writers Series at Appalachian State University.

Submissions sought for Capote creative writing scholarship competition

BOONE—Poetry submissions are being accepted for the $3,300 Truman Capote Literary Trust Scholarship in Creative Writing for 2014-15. The competition is open to rising junior and senior English majors at Appalachian State University who are concentrating in creative writing or who intend to do so. English secondary education undergraduates who have taken two or more creative writing courses may also enter.

Visiting Writers Series opens spring semester series March 20

BOONE—Poet Gina Meyers opens the spring semester lineup for the Hughlene Bostian Frank Visiting Writers Series at Appalachian State University.

Black Sheep Theatre premieres political satire

BOONE—Black Sheep Theatre will perform Dennis Bohr’s newest play, “BROWN: Jesus from Another Planet,” Friday, Feb. 28, and Saturday, March 1, at 8 p.m., and Sunday, March 2, at 2 p.m. in I.G. Greer Arena Theatre on Appalachian State University’s campus. Admission is $5 at the door.

Thielman receives Patrick O. Scott Award

BOONE—Fran Thielman’s interest in medical history and her love of Victorian literature led to her award-winning paper titled “Jane Eyre and Public Health: A Closer Look at the Lowood School Epidemic.”

Heinz History Center in Pittsburgh names Bathanti inaugural scholar-in-residence

BOONE—N.C. Poet Laureate and Appalachian State University creative writing professor Joseph Bathanti has been named the first scholar-in-residence at the Senator John Heinz History Center. The center is located in Pittsburgh.
